About

The west knows best when it comes to fresh produce! Launched in December 2013, our accredited Substation Farmers' Market at the Substation in Newport offers the folk of the west a fantastic variety of fresh Victorian produce and a direct connection to the producers. The market features many of our favourite stallholders and also a bunch of new producers joining the farmers' market movement! The Substation is positioned next to the Newport train station making it a convenient market for those coming on foot. We are thrilled with the response from the local community to the real deal farmers' market, run on the 1st & 3rd Sundays of the month. The Artists' Market in the building of the Substation is also run on the 1st Sunday of the month, featuring local artists and their wares so make sure you pop in to the historical building and have a look around! The Newport Substation was constructed in 1915 and is one of the oldest & largest in the metropolitan system. The building has strong visual and functional associations with the nearby Newport railway workshops, established in 1882 and was used to convert electricity for the railways for half a century. The Substation’s operations ceased in the late 1960s and the building was left abandoned and derelict for 27 years. In 1996 a group of motivated local residents embarked on the task of restoring the building and after 12 years of hard work The Substation officially opened its doors to the public in late 2008 as a community arts facility.
